About this Content
Aims
Dementia is a growing public health concern, with cases projected to rise sharply in coming decades. It is a degenerative condition that not only affects the patient, but also the family and caregiver, who must accommodate behavioural and physical needs, as well as the emotional
burden of experiencing personality change and memory loss.
While much research has focused on the medical management of dementia, the daily experiences of patients and caregivers often remain underexplored. Caregivers face physical, emotional, and financial burdens that can lead to burnout, reduced well-being, and even compromised care quality for the person with dementia. In Singapore, cultural expectations, limited respite options, and fragmented community support can further intensify these challenges.
Lessons Learnt
By integrating a physical community space with a smart, caregiver-centric app, we aim to reduce caregiver stress, enhance patient engagement, and foster a stronger sense of connection within the dementia care ecosystem.
For persons living with dementia, Kampung Ria provides stimulating, personalised activities that can slow cognitive decline and improve mood, whilst allowing caregivers to relax with peace of mind. This blend of physical and digital support transforms caregiving from an isolating responsibility into a shared community effort.
