About this Content
Aims
To provide a simpler, cost-effective, and patient-centred solution for managing persistent post-paracentesis fluid leaks.
Background
Persistent fluid leakage occurs in up to 20.8% of patients following paracentesis. Traditional management methods are often uncomfortable for patients, labor-intensive for healthcare providers, and associated with risks of skin irritation and infection.
Methods
None of the 61 patients had leakage after the intervention. 80% of patients felt very comfortable during the application, and there was an estimated cost saving of up to $4074.8 from May to October 2023.
Results
None of the 61 patients had leakage after the intervention. 80% of patients felt very comfortable during the application, and there was an estimated cost saving of up to $4074.8 from May to October 2023.
Conclusion
Tissue adhesive should be adopted as the standard of care for managing persistent post-paracentesis fluid leaks. It delivers improved patient outcomes, enhances patient-centred care, and provides cost savings for the patients and healthcare system.
Lessons Learnt
Tissue adhesive is a safe, simple, and cost-effective method for managing persistent post-paracentesis fluid leaks. It improves patient comfort and satisfaction while reducing the need for invasive alternatives and aligns with value-based healthcare principles.
