Aims
To improve osteoporosis management in the elderly population following hip fractures.
Background
Hip fractures are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly, with osteoporosis being a key risk factor. Despite available treatments and guidelines, treatment rates are suboptimal.
Methods
The team used a cause and effect diagram to identify root causes and introduced targeted osteoporosis education as a new initiative.
Results
The project addressed a critical gap in secondary fracture prevention for elderly hip fracture patients, achieving sustained outcomes through standardized protocols and multidisciplinary team engagement.
Conclusion
Collaborative, standardized care can bridge the gap in osteoporosis management for hip fracture patients.
Additional Information
Challenges in osteoporosis treatment initiation in geriatric patients admitted under the hip-fracture pathway were discussed in a referenced study.
