Background
In Singapore's multiracial society, accurate translation of medical information is crucial yet resource-intensive, requiring significant time and subject matter experts. Commercial translation engines lack healthcare context capabilities, limiting health information accessibility for non-English speaking patients.
Methods
SGMedTranslate, an AI-powered translation engine, was developed using Large Language Models to translate medical content across Singapore's four official languages (English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil). The engine was designed to process healthcare terminologies and cultural nuances specific to the Singapore context.
Results
SGMedTranslate will enable the translation of 3,000 NHG Health patient education materials, projecting significant savings of approximately $1 million in translation fees and 179,000 man-hours in productivity gains.
Conclusion
