About this Content
Aims
To reduce inappropriate prescriptions of omeprazole among adult patients (Age = 21 years old) in Marine Parade Polyclinic from 34.7% to 20% over 6 months.
Background
Omeprazole is a common medication prescribed for gastritis. Inappropriate use is associated with complications such as osteoporosis. An audit in Marine Parade Polyclinic showed high rates of inappropriate omeprazole prescription (34.7%) from Feb to Jun 2024.
Methods
A quality improvement project was conducted involving a team of doctors and pharmacists. The project included structured and targeted education programs for doctors, derived from international and local guidelines for appropriate omeprazole use.
Results
Reduction in the rates of inappropriately prescribed omeprazole from 34.7% to 12.5% after PDSA cycles 1 and 2. 32 omeprazole orders were deprescribed.
Conclusion
Implementation of education program is effective in reducing number of inappropriate omeprazole prescriptions in Marine Parade Polyclinic.
Lessons Learnt
Limited by weekly sampling of prescriptions and inability of pharmacy records to capture patients who underwent deprescription of omeprazole without tapering regimens.
