About this Content
Aims
Major lower limb amputation compromises patients independence and autonomy, making mobility a common challenge. A prosthesis restores mobility and increases independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Studies show that a shorter time interval between surgery and prosthesis provision results in more active and sustained recovery.
Background
Interventions were implemented in PDSA cycle 1, including the creation of an amputee patient list under Microsoft Teams, prosthetic part prognostication at week 3, and the creation of a funding triage workflow.
Methods
Post intervention, there was a significant reduction in the median waiting time from 263 days to 199 days, achieving a 24% improvement.
Results
Standardised work processes greatly reduced the average length and variability in time to receipt of prosthesis.
Conclusion
The intervention achieved the target of reducing waiting time for prosthesis by more than 20%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the implemented strategies.
Lessons Learnt
Standardised work processes greatly reduced the average length and variability in time to receipt of prosthesis.
