About this Content
Aims
This project explores AI-generated medication counselling videos (MedVid) as an alternative to face-to-face counselling in NHG Health pharmacies.
Background
A 2023 Singapore study found 40% medication non-compliance due to medication literacy issues, such as not understanding side effects. Traditional video production remains resource-intensive and difficult to scale up in production.
Methods
AI-generated videos were produced for 78 medications in Singapore's four official languages. 149 patients and/or caregivers were recruited and invited to watch MedVid for medications they were collecting. Participants completed questionnaires assessing medication knowledge and video acceptance.
Results
Baseline medication knowledge exceeded 70% for most participants. Knowledge improvement was higher in new medication users (59.0%) versus existing users (43.7%). 91.9% accepted MedVid as an alternative to face-to-face counselling. AI-generated videos saved 4.5 manhours per video compared to conventional methods.
Conclusion
MedVid proved effective as a scalable alternative to conventional counselling, achieving patient acceptance and suitable integration into existing care frameworks, particularly for digitally-enabled patients managing their medication regimens.
Lessons Learnt
Visual illustrations and multilingual availability enhanced medication understanding. Users found MedVid to be a suitable alternative to conventional face-to-face counselling, supporting its role as a patient empowerment tool.
