About this Content
Aims
To reduce the percentage of physical restraint usage by 10% (from 29% to 19%) in TTSH Ward 6 & 10 @ Renci within 6 months.
Background
Physical restraint has been associated with harm in elder adults and increased length of stay. Studies show that inappropriate use of physical restraint can endanger patient safety and cause serious physical and mental consequences.
Methods
The process involves identifying patients whose behavior can cause harm, reviewing by ward NOs/Drs, informing NOK, monitoring restraint every two hours, and removing restraint once the condition improves.
Results
Cost saving on restraint-free time (in 1 year): $565,440. Intangible benefits include less harm to patients, increased nurses' satisfaction, and more satisfied patients and families.
Conclusion
The interventions led to cost savings and intangible benefits, improving patient and staff satisfaction.
Lessons Learnt
Members learned CPIP tools on problem-solving. Challenges were encountered on implementing the interventions one at a time. Importance of continuing data collection to sustain and spread the improvements.
