About this Content
Aims
Introducing preliminary reporting for NCS by Neuro Technologists aims to reduce report turnaround time and patients wait time for their next appointment. In addition, we aim to reduce time taken for Neurologists spent on reporting and increase Neurologists and Technologists work satisfaction.
Background
Reporting of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) was traditionally performed solely by accredited Neurologists. With increasing demand for NCS, Neurologists are expected to spend more time on reporting, resulting in longer turnaround time and less clinical hours
Methods
Pre-implementation: Neuro Technologists underwent training for a month with Neurologists to standardise reporting terminology and clarify any doubts. Teaching sessions were also organised for in-depth analysis of rare and interesting cases. Workload for 2022 (without preliminary reporting) and 2023 (with preliminary reporting) were reviewed and analysed. Feedback from the Neuro Technologists and Neurologists were tabulated and analysed via a short 5 question survey given 1 year post implementation.
Results
After implementing preliminary reporting done by the Neuro Technologists, they have reported an approximate 60% of the total neurophysiological tests done in 2023. With each report taking approximately 10 minutes to generate, a total of 161.33 hours of the Neurologists time was saved for other clinical duties. The average maximum report turnaround time also reduced by at least 2 days.
Conclusion
This initiative has brought time savings to the Neurologists and provided our Neuro Technologists with the opportunity to practise at the top of their license. With a faster report turnover time, the primary team is now able to deliver more timely care for our patients.
Lessons Learnt
Neuro Technologists are now able to better interpret the raw data obtained from the NCS and correlate them with the patients condition. Preliminary reporting provided valuable learning opportunities for the Neuro Technologists to learn from the Neurologists, which in turn leads to additional educational benefits. All Neuro Technologists feel a stronger sense of achievement and satisfaction when their reports are in concordance with the Neurologists.
