About this Content
Aims
The aim is to create an environment that promotes adherence to postoperative ERAS components, particularly early nutrition and mobilization, to facilitate a return to normal function.
Background
High compliance with ERAS interventions improves surgical outcomes and reduces health costs, but achieving this remains a universal challenge.
Methods
Specialized training enhanced staff confidence and motivation, empowering ward nurses to initiate nutrition and mobilization soon after surgery. Nursing booklets and procedure-based checklists ensured increased protocol adherence and patient safety. Infrastructural enhancements, including a walking track, communal dining facility, TV, and reading corner, were introduced to encourage ambulation, social interaction, and early independence.
Results
3x improvement in early oral intake. 2x improvement in early mobilization. Further 33% 50% reduction in length of stay. Increased staff and patient satisfaction. $480,000 savings through reduction in complications, high dependency bed use, and length of stay.
Conclusion
The ERAS ward concept is a cost-effective way to deliver value to patients and staff for postoperative care. This model of care can be replicated and scaled to other wards for greater clinical and financial impact in perioperative care.
Lessons Learnt
Improved compliance by 10%, reduced complications from 60 to 39, and reduced median length of stay from 5 to 4 days.
