About this Content
Aims
To establish a comprehensive value-based care (VBC) framework aimed at enhancing patient outcomes in mental healthcare.
Background
The healthcare landscape is experiencing a significant transformation with the emergence of value-based care (VBC), which focuses on outcomes that matter to patients while considering healthcare costs. In mental healthcare, implementing VBC presents unique challenges due to the complexity of psychiatric care.
Methods
IMH implemented a step-wise, five-component strategic approach: establishing a VBC Workgroup, developing a value framework incorporating DIME principles, conducting capability-building initiatives, establishing VBC clinics, and standardizing and digitalizing patient-reported outcome and experience measurements.
Results
Implementation of this framework led to 78 staff members and 14 multidisciplinary teams receiving DIME training, resulting in 19 active DIME projects. Two flagship programs, the Transitional Care Programme (TCP) and the Choice and Partnership Approach (CAPA) model, showed promising outcomes.
Conclusion
The systematic implementation of VBC at IMH demonstrates a promising framework for mental healthcare transformation, providing a foundation for sustainable value-based care implementation.
Lessons Learnt
Challenges remain in collecting outcome and experience measures meaningful to patients, with low uptake rates of PROMs due to clinician and patient barriers. These need to be addressed through education and dialogue.
