About this Content
Aims
Our study aims to evaluate healthcare providers' perceptions of suboptimal prescribing practices and identify prevalent areas of concern to inform targeted interventions in Singapore's healthcare system.
Background
Our study aims to evaluate healthcare providers' perceptions of suboptimal prescribing practices and identify prevalent areas of concern to inform targeted interventions in Singapore's healthcare system.
Methods
A cross-sectional anonymous survey was conducted using FormSG and disseminated via institutional Value-Based Care offices across NHG institutions over a two-month period, concluding on 4 June 2025. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative responses were analysed using thematic analysis and iterative coding process.
Results
The survey reveals that suboptimal prescribing is primarily influenced by the interplay between provider practices and patient expectations. Providers have identified time constraints, knowledge gaps, professional hierarchies intersecting with patient beliefs, health literacy, and medication demands.
Conclusion
Suboptimal prescribing practices are influenced by various factors, and addressing them requires both provider and patient-focused strategies.
Lessons Learnt
Effective intervention requires a two-pronged approach: empowering providers through optimized roles and educational support while also enhancing patient health literacy and engagement in shared decision-making.
