About this Content
Aims
To establish a nurse-led intraoperative cell salvage service to reduce allogeneic blood transfusion and improve patient outcomes.
Background
Previously, ICS in SGH Major Operating Theater was supported on an ad-hoc basis by perfusionists and vendors, which was less reliable and raised concerns about standards of care and patient safety.
Methods
Implemented ICS service in SGH with standardized operation protocol and quality control measures to ensure safety and immediate availability.
Results
Reduced the amount of allogeneic blood transfusion perioperatively per surgery from 0.5 packs to 0.33 packs, with an annual cost avoidance of SGD $1,045,217 and additional cost savings from reduced blood transfusion expenditure amounting to SGD $16,094.
Conclusion
The nurse-led ICS service effectively reduces allogeneic blood transfusion and associated costs, improving patient outcomes and optimizing health resources.
Lessons Learnt
Standardizing protocols and establishing quality control measures are crucial for the successful implementation of ICS services.
