About this Content
Aims
Eliminating the incidence of upper limb phlebitis in patients with IV plugs inserted in level 12 inpatient wards in TTSH in 6 months.
Background
Intravenous cannulation (IVC) is a routine procedure used to deliver medications or fluids for therapeutic purposes. Phlebitis is the most common iatrogenic complication which can lead to local and systemic sepsis. Prevention is key, and the incidence and severity of phlebitis need to be assessed and risk factors identified.
Methods
Sustainable means of data collection using Flowsheets and Lines assessment, staff education through uniformed slides and quizzes, and patient education using infographics and pamphlets.
Results
Formulation of the mission statement was challenging due to lack of baseline data, requiring manual counting. A team member left midway, affecting processes, but a new member was recruited.
Conclusion
The project may result in long-term monetary savings and reduction in morbidity if it becomes sustainable.
Lessons Learnt
The CPIP method is complex and requires a step-wise approach. Dedicated team members are crucial. Communication is key for regular updates and feedback. Sustainability may be challenging due to resource constraints.
