Aims
The aim of the project is to develop an innovative automated medical coding assistant using Russell GPT and Endeavour AI to improve the efficiency and accuracy of medical coding.
Background
The project addresses the issue of under coding in medical records due to time constraints and incomplete documentation, which affects hospital billing and performance measurement.
Methods
A pilot study was conducted at NUH and NTFGH involving clinical coders, clinicians, IT specialists, and administrators. The project involved integrating Russell GPT with electronic medical records to automate the coding process, reducing the time required for coding and improving accuracy.
Results
The pilot study showed a reduction in coding time from 15 minutes to 5 minutes per case, with a 33% efficiency gain. The casemix index increased from 2.95 to 3.05, indicating improved accuracy.
Conclusion
The AI-assisted coding system demonstrates significant time savings and accuracy improvements, with potential for scalability and broader adoption.
Lessons Learnt
The phased approach allowed for adjustments and improvements at each stage. Continuous refinement of the AI system and prompt engineering were crucial for improving accuracy.
