About this Content
Aims
Develop an automated tracking and reminder system (TRACER) for ureteric stent removal, improving patient safety and efficiency.
Background
Manual tracking of ureteric stents led to omissions, increasing the risk of medical complications from prolonged implant retention.
Methods
Implemented the TRACER system, a dual-prong tracking method combining T-DOC instrument tracking and Electronic Medical Records (EMR), with automatic email reminders for stent removal.
Results
TRACER successfully tracked all 82 ureteric stents inserted, ensuring accurate documentation and timely removals. Manpower savings of 87.5% in data entry time were achieved.
Conclusion
TRACER has been highly effective in improving ureteric stent tracking. Future plans include expanding its use for tracking all medical implants and scaling it to other institutions.
Lessons Learnt
Automated tracking improves patient safety, efficiency, and reduces manual workload. The dual-prong system minimizes missed entries.
