Aims
Provide clinicians with real-time antimicrobial prescribing guidelines via a mobile application, improving antibiotic stewardship and reducing inappropriate prescriptions.
Background
Overuse of antibiotics contributes to resistance, limiting treatment options and increasing healthcare costs. Inpatient antibiotic use in Singapore (50%) is higher than in Europe/North America. Clinicians expressed a need for a mobile antimicrobial guide.
Methods
Developed ABxSG in collaboration with SGH ASU, Synapxe, Axrail, and SingHealth ODS. The app provides hospital-based prescribing guidelines, drug monographs, medical calculators, and evidence-based recommendations.
Results
After 9 months, antibiotic use was reduced by 2.83%, saving ~$50,000 per month in IV antibiotics and 540 nursing hours. Antibiotic-related pharmacist interventions decreased by 10%, freeing up 23 pharmacist hours monthly.
Conclusion
ABxSG has enhanced antimicrobial stewardship in Singapore. Future updates will expand its database, improve guideline customization, and integrate AI-driven recommendations.
Lessons Learnt
Digital antimicrobial stewardship tools improve prescribing accuracy and reduce unnecessary interventions.
