About this Content
Aims
To improve the management of Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDIs) at the National University Centre for Oral Health Singapore (NUCOHS) by implementing a multipronged approach integrating education and administrative support.
Background
An internal audit at NUCOHS found that the quality of TDI management and review was lacking due to barriers such as inadequate clinician knowledge, poor adherence to guidelines, and time limitations.
Methods
The project involved a multipronged approach with three interventions: a refresher lecture, standardized recording templates in the electronic dental records system, and improved access to resources (the R3 TDI framework).
Results
Post-implementation, the proportion of adequately managed TDI cases increased significantly, with baseline management scores improving from 62.5% to 100% and review management scores from 100% to 100%.
Conclusion
The R3 framework significantly improved the management of TDIs at NUCOHS, demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating education and administrative support.
Lessons Learnt
Changing clinician behavior is challenging. Education on the benefits of change and ensuring the new workflow is not onerous is crucial. Leveraging Epic’s SmartTools can improve carequality.
